And The Last Shall Be First
By gartenfische | September 28, 2007
But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
Mark 10:31

Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.
Mark 9:37

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.
Matthew 20:27

No one better than the others . . . the first becomes last, the last first . . . and the leader shall be the servant. Jesus turns everything on its head.

Of all the pithy quotes I’ve read about humility lately, this has become my favorite:
Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself at all.
-William Temple
One day; yes, one day.

I confess to Photoshopping that baby in there (no, really?), but he belongs—he SO belongs. Let the prez serve him. Amen.

this makes me think about how i must remind myself with parenting sometimes when i am feeling frustrated and angry that i am my children’s servant. not in that i cook and clean for them but that i care for them. if that makes sense at all.

Freedom from thinking about yourself at all. Brilliant.
Beautiful post, as usual.

Larry, Thank you! And thanks for visiting–of course I don’t mind. :) Your blog is great, and I’d love to submit something. I’ll visit again soon!
Cranky, It makes perfect sense. (Speaking as a mother!)
YM, Yeah, it IS brilliant. It’s one that’s going to stick in my mind for a long time, I can tell. (And thank you!)

Yes! Yes :) That is another reason why I practice :) Sometimes, for a few tiny seconds or minutes one manages to become truly free of oneself, get a glimpse of the other side and return, well, just a little bit changed.
Thank you.

I also came from FranIAm. This is a lovely post, especially with the pictures. Gently provocative and challenging. Thank you.

MM, yeah, those little glimpses . . . thank God, or we’d probably get so discouraged!
